A Reaction To “Young Blood: My Friend Paul”

Coming from a co-ed Catholic school the Junior-Senior Promenade is one of the highlights and most important experiences in your high school life. Fortunately, I was in the opposite position with Eryl Amrhein N. Agustin, author of “My Friend Paul” published on the Young Blood section of Philippine Daily Inquirer, when I was in high school. I went to a total of 6 proms; one when I was a freshie, three on my junior year and two on my senior year of high school, it was only once that I have asked a guy to prom and yes, I agree when she said promposals (prom  + proposals) are for both boys and girls to do.

“(promposal) Politically and sociologically speaking, this concept actually breaks the gender stereotyping in our society.”

My uncle got married 2 years ago, he married his high school and first love, which their love story started when his wife asked the question “Will you go to prom with me?”, this little phase, this event can start or build something. It’s a powerful statement for young teens because prom is the epitome of your high school life.

I remember at my junior prom, as me and my prom date/suitor swayed to the music of “Never Had A Dream Come True” of SClub7 and I was singing to him the chorus and as I ended with “Never had a dream come true until the day that I found you” I whispered “I can be your girl now” that marked the beginning of out two-year love story.

But for her, it was the opposite; it marked the deterioration of her friendship with her bestfriend Paul (origin of the title), with Paul missing out on her prom despite having said yes when she made all effort for her promposal to him, long conversations became one liner replies until one of them completely stopped replying to the other.

There are so many people that are temporarily important in our lives, for me it’s a petty reason to end the friendship because me and my guy bestfriend, even though I missed his prom at senior year, kept in touch each other. But there are a lot of people from that I have completely lost touched with after graduating high school. That’s just it! Those relationships with people that ended so quickly wasn’t really meant to last, nor did it actually met the standards of “true” relationships.

Reading this entry made me realize that my life has changed so much, I must admit that the things that mattered to me so much 4-5 years ago were petty but still essential to my growing up, if it wasn’t for those I wouldn’t be who I am today and upon reading this entry I can definitely say:

“teh, I can relate!”

Lover, Where Are You Now?

Are you with the stars that shine bright above my head?

Are you with the angels in the clouds high up above the ground?

Are you with the saints waiting for God’s embrace?

Are you with the sun that rises so beautifully at dawn?

Are you with the moon that leaves the night too soon?

Are you with the sea that crashes waves upon the shore?

Are you with the wind that whispers upon my ear?

Are you with the crowd that’s making so much sound?

Are you in a club dancing with a chick?

Are you in a bed in someone’s arms?

Are you in the kitchen making your favorite cup of coffee?

Are you in your car off to the middle of nowhere?

Ohh wait… you’re in my head, just in my head because you don’t exist.
